Just got back from lessons in Florida for windsurfing. I love it and now i’m thinking about getting my own gear. I live in Illinois but have easy access to lake Michigan in Indiana. I plan on getting on the lake from both Illinois and Indiana but do I need to register the board? where do I do that? and what are the rules?

I know in Florida you can simply jump in the ocean anywhere with no state tags. But in Illinois I know you do. So if anybody windsurfs In Illinois or Indiana please help me out. Thanks.

You don’t need to register the board. Lol. Windsurfers would riot if you had to pay for the registering of 10+ boards many windsurfers have.
Rules are the same as sailing rules… Know sailing right of ways (you have ROW over all power boats, starboard tack has ROW over port, the downwind sailor has ROW, stuff like that…) Life vest rules also don’t apply unless they’re actually enforced in your area (local windsurfers would know), but given that life vests get in the way of harnesses, wet suits help you float, and harnesses help you float (not to mention that you might need to dive below something so a life vest could be detrimental to your safety), most places don’t actually enforce those laws on windsurfers.
