Hi, I am from Rio, there is not much of a difference, just different places and accents. The people are very friendly and warm. Although I have never been to Florianópolis I did have the pleasure to visit Porto Alegre. It is trully a beautiful place. I am sure you will like it….
Rio is a much more agitaded city, the beaches are to die for. There is lots to do here. I am sure you will enjoy yourself plenty.

I think that the best place for you would be Florianópolis, simply because Florianópolis is a island enclosed for several other islands and the aquatic sports are very practiced for there. Here in Rio de Janeiro the city is Very populous the beaches are always full of swimmers. And to practice aquatic sports here would be necessary you to go far to seek beaches less frequented by swimmers.

Male college student? You want Rio. All the cities are great but there is no city to be young in quite like Rio.

The water is also significantly warmer too. You won’t want to be kitesurfing in Floripa in July, but in Rio you can manage without a wetsuit all year round.

If you do choose to study in Rio choose the federal university and not PUC. PUC is a joke. The professors are unprofessional and the students are the pampered elite of Rio who spend class chattering about their trip to NYC and how many Lacoste shirts they were able to get past customs. The federal university is more rigorous, but the students are friendlier and more serious.
