windsurfing
1992dodge asked:

I’m going to be taking a 3 hour lesson in Tampa Florida. I have never been on a surf board or even been near the ocean. I can skateboard but only got as far as an ollie and even then I’m happy if I didn’t fall on my face.

It looks a lot of fun and I plan on even renting equipment afterwards if I like it, but do you think I will get a hang of it in a 3 hour lesson? Is it as hard as skateboarding? Anyways thanks if anybody helps.

P.S. Oh also being in Florida in December should I get the wetsuit to or does it matter. It’s going to be in the 70’s which is hot where I come from.

As hard as skateboarding? As a windsurfer and a surfer, I can say windsurfing makes dropping in on a seven foot wave feel easy… About a hundred times harder than ollieing.

You definitely don’t need a wet suit, you’ll be on a huge beginner board anyway and shouldn’t spend too much time getting wet… but the water will be warm. Florida water is at least 20 degrees warmer than San Diego water, and its November and I still don’t need a full wet suit for windsurfing here (go with a 2:1 top and I’m fine… there’s so much adrenaline in you when you’re in the water that you’re just trying to relaunch and not thinking about it. you’ll just climb up the board and re-uphaul, but when you lose the sail you probably won’t end up in the water because you won’t be powered up)

Anyway, in a 3 hour lesson you might get the hang of moving around, but you won’t be doing any “real windsurfing” (ie, planing). You’ll have fun, but windsurfing takes YEARS to master and you won’t really be able to do anything after a three hour lesson (although the first couple times you start moving you think its the coolest thing ever and before you know it you’re hooked =D)

don’t believe me that windsurfing is the hardest sport to master with the worst learning curve? Find something that looks more nutty than the picture on the third post here:
