I will be traveling with a few friends this October/November for 3 weeks to a month (at least). We were originally just thinking of going to Costa Rica and maybe Nicaragua, but after discovering how inexpensive the buses are I am thinking of seeing more countries. Is is better to just soak up Costa Rica and Nicaragua for a couple of weeks each or is it possible to visit Panama and Guatemala as well? Or are there must see places to go? We are probably bringing some surfboards, but are also planning on windsurfing/rafting/diving/etc. Thanks for your help!

bus travel is cheap but don’t be in a hurry. Your are looking at a 8-9 hrs San Jose to the Panama border. Not sure about to Guatemala but its 13+ hrs from Tegucigalpa to Guatemala City.
I think you would enjoy spending longer time in a few places rather than spending your trip looking out the window of an overcrowded bus.

Ik zou om in Nicaragua adviseren te beginnen, een paar dagen daar, dan bus aan San Jose, Costa Rica, en hun stranden en vulkanen doorbrengen.
